DEPUTY ANTHONY DIAZ (Yolo County DSA):
On Sunday, June 15, 2008, Deputy Diaz was involved in an exchange of gunfire while on duty. During the exchange, he sustained a gunshot wound in the chest from the suspect's rifle, which penetrated his protective body armor. On the morning of June 16, Deputy Diaz sadly passed as a result of the fatal gunshot wound. The suspect is in custody and has already been arraigned. On June 2, Deputy Herrick and his family lost their home and all of the belongings in a fire. Luckily, Deputy Herrick was on patrol and his wife and five young children were not at home. As you can imagine, Deputy Herrick and his family are in great need of clothing and other basic living items. If at all possible, please help out our fellow Valley Chapter member with a contribution, or donation:

KOSTA PANOS BENEFIT FUND:
As many of you have heard, Stockton Reserve POA member and University of the Pacific Police Officer Kosta Panos recently encountered some very serious medical complications (related to his heart) that have left him on the sidelines for an undermined amount of time. As a result, he has not been working and needs some financial assistance to get through these very difficult times. If you and your associations are able, please provide assistance through the following:

OFFICER DENNIS EDDY (Bakersfield POA):
As many of you may be aware, Officer Eddy was involved in a shooting in Bakersfield on February 9, 2008. During the shooting, the suspect, a known gang member was shot and killed by Officer Eddy and his partner, after being fired upon first. The suspect shot at and hit Officer Eddy in the chest and in the leg. Officer Eddy's bullet resistant vest stopped the bullet that hit his chest, however, the bullet that struck his leg caused much more damage and on February 22, 2008, his leg was partially amputated below the right knee. Prior to the amputation, Officer Eddy was transported to a Northern California hospital to receive specialized treatment. The financial burden of this transfer has taken its toll on the Eddy family. The South San Joaquin Chapter has donated $1,000.00 to assist Officer Eddy and his family. South San Joaquin Chapter Director Bill Harbottle has asked other chapters and associations to match, or exceed the donation they have made. Following are two PDF files that describe the incident and the aftermath. Please take the time to read them. Donations can be made to:

GRANT POA NEEDS ASSISTANCE:
Recently, the Grant Unified School District merged with four other school districts to form a very large school district. The new board and superintendent have publicly announced their desire to dissolve the Grant Schools Police Department. Grant POA and Grant Reserve POA are two of the newest Valley Chapter PORAC members. If you, or your association has any advice that can assist them, they would love to hear from you. Grant POA has retained Mastagni for their battle, however, the small size of their association puts them in a sitation where they do not have financial reserves to withstand a sustained fight. As such, they are asking for any financial assistance that you are able to provide. When the fight is over, they will return any unused monies donated back to the donating associations, or donate those funds in the name of the donating association (at their request). Grant POA would like to thank everyone for any assistance that can be provided. Please email William Cho for further information at wcho@grantpoa.org.

As we all know, this line of work is not easy. It carries a lot of joy and fulfillment, however, it also carries pain and sadness. This section is to honor our Valley Chapter brothers and sisters who have fallen in the line of duty.
